If you don’t have a car or don’t like to drive, if you are looking for secluded locations, and immerse yourself into the deep silence of the country, if you love nature, culture, good food and good company, this proposal will affect you for sure.
The entire route runs through three provinces of Tuscany and different beautiful landscape contexts. The tour winds on trails, dirt roads and lonely paved roads with very low traffic.
The differences in altitude are minimal (max 300m) however you need a good resistance because the average daily travel distance is 20 km (min. 19, max 22) and average travel time is 6 hours per day. This is a walking itinerary, but every stage is reachable by public transport too, so you can choose to go on foot every day or just some of them.

From Florence, Piazzale Michelangelo, you will proceed through the beautiful streets with breathtaking views of the city, on the hills in the South of Florence, passing under the imposing Certosa di Firenze. From there we continue up to the village of Chiesanuova, where you can enjoy a coffee, an ice cream or a good “schiacciata” with cold cuts.
After the break the journey proceeds towards San Casciano Val di Pesa, a typical Chianti village, surrounded by a beautiful landscape. End of the first leg.
Dinner and overnight in typical farmhouse.
Day 3: Trekking in Chianti among olive trees and vineyards - Certaldo
Breakfast. The second leg runs through the charming Chianti countryside, dotted with beautiful farms and characterized by a particularly mild hillside setting and a very nice territory dominated by olive trees and the vineyards.
A stop in Fornacette, a small village along the way, will allow us to have coffee or to get a good sandwich with local products. From here, we get the road to the beautiful and less known village of Certaldo. Approaching Certaldo the landscape is characterized by the presence of “calanchi”, ravines with some impressive formations. End of the second stage.
Dinner and overnight in Certaldo country house.
Day 4: Trekking along the Francigena way to San Gimignano
Breakfast. The third stage is the most urban one, unfolding mostly on paved small roads, but not traffic lanes. Once left the village of Certaldo, the road joins the Via Francigena after about an hour, until we reach the beautiful San Gimignano. This itinerary takes place mostly on the ridge, with lovely view of the surrounding countryside. After visiting San Gimignano, we proceed for a few kilometers until we reach our farmhouse in the countryside. End of the third leg.
Dinner and overnight in San Gimignano.
Day 5: Trekking into the wild: from the Natural Reserve of Castelvecchio to Volterra
After breakfast, we leave the farmhouse crossing a land characterized by the presence of very small and quaint villages, till we reach the Natural Reserve of Castelvecchio, the wildest area of the itinerary, where we will also visit the ruins of Castelvecchio, an ancient fort (castrum vetus) with probably Etruscan origins. We pass this area walking on a gravel road towards the magnificent Volterra. That is the ancient salt road, a road that once linked Florence to the sea and guaranteed the supply of salt to the city.
